Sunday, Feb. 3, is Super Bowl LIII, and fans all around the world are excited the game… except for everyone in New Orleans.
Last weekend, the New Orleans Saints took on the Los Angeles Rams. The game came down to the clock with a minute and 45 seconds to go in the fourth quarter, tied 20-20. Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw a pass to receiver Tommylee Lewis but was interrupted by an aggressive push by Rams cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman which forced Lewis to the ground before catching the ball. It was easily a pass interference, but no flag was ever thrown.
Had the officials called the flag, the Saints could have run the clock out before attempting to kick the field goal. Instead, they kicked a field goal, and the Rams were given the ball with less than 45 seconds in the fourth quarter. The Rams pushed down the field eventually kicking a field goal and tying the game sending it into overtime. Rams win in overtime 26-23.
Senior Tom Angus said, “The controversial call at the end of the game will forever be a mark on the integrity of the officiating of the NFL. The blatant nature of the play should have warranted a pass interference.”
Everyone around the country has been furious about the uncalled pass interference. People have taken it to the internet by tweeting at the NFL and even have written complaint letters. On Twitter, there was a petition going around about having a rematch between the two teams. I personally signed this petition because I believe the Saints need a redemption game after being robbed of the win.
Senior quarterback John Bean said, “I personally signed the petition myself because I think it’s outrageous that the flag was never thrown.”
In my opinion, the Saints deserved to win that game and punch themselves a ticket to the Super Bowl. Instead, they were given an extremely unfair call. Referees make mistakes a lot in the NFL. Such a bad call can lead to refs suffering great consequences and can possibly jeopardize their careers They will most likely be fired from the NFL and be charged fines for not making the call. I hope to see a rematch between these two teams, so we can see the Saints destroy the Rams!
