After a five-year hiatus from this meet, the Brother Rice Cross Country team competed in the Lakefront Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 29. For the past five seasons, the Crusaders travelled to Wheaton for the Warrior Invite, but Coach Wazio decided to switch it up this season due to the cancellation of the meet in Wheaton.
Both frosh/soph and varsity levels competed. The course for the frosh/soph was four kilometers and the varsity was five kilometers.
The frosh/soph team took seventh place with an outstanding performance by sophomore Sean Deane. After his race, Deane said, “This course was definitely one of the faster ones of the season. I am looking forward to the next couple weeks of training so I can prepare for a good race at the CCL Championships.”
The varsity level placed sixth out of the twenty-two team field. Dan Spellman finished sixth place overall with the fastest time for the Crusaders.
The team will take the next two weeks to prepare for their conference championships where the varsity hopes to place top four and possibly top three according to Coach Wazio.
With a twenty-two man roster, the cross country team looks to the juniors and sophomores a little extra as they make up the majority of the top seven runners.
This coming weekend, the team will run a two-mile race for Brother O’Keefe day.
