In the past, emergencies have arisen during the homecoming dance. One problem in particular regards the contacting of parents of the Brother Rice students’ homecoming dates. This year, the planners of the 2014 homecoming dance have instituted a “homecoming contract” to ensure a safer and more suitable environment for the students attending the dance. This contract requires the signatures of the parents of the student and the student’s date. If any emergency were to occur, the Brother Rice faculty will have an easier time contacting parents.
Additionally, Brother Rice students are not required to wear a suit coat, and the girls are permitted to wear various types of gym shoes (i.e. Converse, Nike, and Vans). Students are forbidden from any display of inappropriate dancing and may have to perform a breathalyzer test if deemed necessary.
The homecoming dance moderator, Mrs. Barkowski, believes that the contract has helped the dance in a positive way: “In past years we have had accidents with girls who have come without shoes. This year, to ensure a safer environment, we have stopped a shoe and coat check (due to a lack of parent volunteers) and ask that the girls wear any type of shoes that will protect them from an injury.”
The homecoming dance took place Saturday, September 27, in the South Gym.
